Feed Wanda and Willy the Watermelon Summer CVC Words Activity
It is the middle of summer, and what better way to learn or review letters of the alphabet and blending sounds on a day-to-day basis than with our Feed Wanda and Willy Summer CVC Words Activity? This simple yet fun and effective activity will help your little ones to review letter sounds and practise blending sounds to make CVC words.
What are CVC Words?
CVC words are the building blocks of reading and writing for kindergarteners or young children. CVC means consonant-vowel-consonant. These are the first words that our littles will read by decoding, otherwise known as sounding out.
CVC words, along with some sight words, will make up most text your little ones will encounter that makes sense to them because they are phonetic and have no tricky sounds or rules because each letter makes its phonetic sound. So your little ones can apply their letter knowledge in order to decode words which, if your child is like my girls, develop their confidence.

Other materials needed to recreate this activity :
- Printer
- White Card-stock paper
- Scissors/Stencil knife
- Glue
- Laminating machine (Laminating the pieces will make the activity more durable.)
- Paper bag or a cardboard box.
How to put this activity together
To prepare this CVC Words activity for your little ones, go to our shop and download our PDF.
Step 1: Gather all the other materials you will need that are listed above to put this activity together.
Step 2: Laminate the pieces of this activity if this is a step you wish to follow. I recommend laminating the pieces, especially if they will be used in a classroom and manipulated regularly by many little hands.
Step 3: Cut out the faces, the mouths on Wanda/Willy and all the watermelon slices.
Step 4: Attach your face to your box or paper bag and cut out the space for the mouth with your scissors/stencil knife. ( For a classroom setting, I would recommend using a small cardboard box.)
Step 5: Place your watermelon slices on a table or on a paper plate, and your activity is ready for summer learning fun!
How to use this summer CVC words activity:
In school, our little ones will learn the letter ‘a’ as their first vowel. Therefore, if your little ones are being exposed to CVC words for the first time with this activity, I recommend teaching them to sound out The CVC words with words that have the letter “a” in the middle first. When your little one is comfortable, keep adding words with one vowel sound at a time until they can read and identify words with all the vowels.
A great way to start off this game is to use plastic letters/flashcards to review letter sounds/blending.
Sound out and Read CVC Words
Have your little ones pick a watermelon slice and sound out, blend and pronounce then feed the watermelon slice to Wanda/Willy.
Word search
Call words on the watermelon slices and have your little ones search for the word, and feed Willy/Wanda the specified words.
Look for words by vowel sound
Have your child find CVC words by each vowel. For example: Find all the CVC words With the Short ‘a’ sound and feed them to Willy/Wanda.
