Spider Find and Cover the Number| A Number Recognition Activity for Preschoolers and Kindergarteners

We can say that spring is here, and along with the change in season, we will be welcoming a variety of spiders, bugs and insects into our gardens and backyards!

I cannot say I am a fan of real live spiders, but my littles think they are super cool! So I created this simple spider-themed activity for them.

Spider Find and Cover Counting/ Number Recognition Activity

How about adding this simple and functional activity to your spiders, bugs and insects learning shelves to help your little ones identify numbers 1-20?

It is super simple to put together, durable and can be manipulated by little ones until they are competent in identifying the numbers 1-20

This simple activity can be used to work on the following skills:

  • Number sequence
  • Shape recognition
  • One-to-one correspondence.
  • Fine motor skills
  • Hand-eye coordination
  • Concentration
  • Teamwork
  • Oral language skills

What you will need to recreate this activity:

  • Cardboard
  • Bottle caps
  • Blue stickers
  • Marker

How to put this activity together:

Step 1: Use your marker to draw a spiderweb onto the cardboard. It does not need to be perfect! As you can see by the shape of mine.

Step 2: Use a bottle cap to draw twenty circles on the web to represent the spiders.

Step 3: Write numbers 1-20 onto your blue stickers and place them in your order of choice into the circles.

Step 4: Use your black marker to draw legs on the spiders and to write numbers 1-20 on your bottle caps.

In four easy steps, your activity is ready for your little ones to learn numbers 1-20 in a fun and engaging way.

How to present this activity to your children:

  • You can start by singing songs about numbers 1-20.
  • Read a story about numbers 1-20.
  • Use any educational toy to show your children the numbers 1- 20. We worked at lining up our bottle caps on our table as we counted up.
  • Watching educational videos that teach children to count up from 1-20.
  • After introducing the numbers to your child or reviewing them, you can work with them to find and cover the numbers 1-20.
  • Over time your little one will become confident in identifying numbers 1-20 and completing this activity on their own.

After completing the activity, you can play a game of I-Spy and have your little one find the spiders and remove the caps for numbers 1-20.

How to extend this activity:

  • You can select a number and have your child find the number that is one more or one less.
  • You can use the caps to work at counting by 2’s,3’s and 5’s if you have little ones who are more advance and would do well with a challenge.

We do hope you find this activity useful.
