Buzz, Buzz, Buzz! Spring is here! We are super excited about all the changes that are taking place around us!

Here is a simple activity you can try at home to work on :

  • Reviewing letter sounds
  • Blending
  • CVC words
  • Fine motor skills
  • Hand-eye coordination
  • Concentration

Give the Bees their Stripes

What you will need to recreate this simple activity:

  • Learning journal
  • Construction paper
  • Pencil
  • Markers
  • scissors
  • Glue

How to put this simple CVC words activity together:

Step 1: Draw the outline of the bees in your journal. When adding the wings, make them big enough so that you can write CVC words across them.

Step 2: Use a yellow marker to colour the body of the bees and a black marker to outline them.

Step 3: Cut black construction into stripes for your little ones to add to each bee.

Step 4: Use a white chalk marker to write the letters for each CVC word onto the stripes.

Your simple, fun learning activity is ready!

Grab some glue and let the learning fun begin!

When working with your little one, let them:

  • Identify the letters in each word.
  • Make the sound for each of the letters.
  • Clap for each sound, tap for each sound, get creative!
  • For those littles still working on confidence where their knowledge of letters and their corresponding sounds are concerned, have them tell you the name of objects that also start with a particular sound.
  • Read the words

I always like to share the importance of the skill we are working on and why with any activity I share to help parents at home.

What are CVC Words?

CVC words are the building blocks of reading and writing for kindergarteners or young children. CVC means consonant-vowel-consonant. These are the first words that our littles will read by decoding, otherwise known as sounding out.
CVC words, along with some sight words, will make up most text your little ones will encounter that makes sense to them because they are phonetic and have no tricky sounds or rules because each letter makes its phonetic sound. So your little ones can apply their letter knowledge in order to decode words which, if your child is like my girls, develops their confidence.

This activity can be recreated to work on the following:

  • Letters
  • Numbers
  • Shapes
  • Sight words
  • Addition

We do hope you find this activity useful.
