It is almost springtime, and we are so ready to welcome the change in the weather and to learn all about the bugs and insects that come along with the change.
One of our favourite bugs is the ladybug, so I thought I would share this simple activity you can try at home with your little ones to work on
- Number recognition
- Number word recognition
- One-to-one correspondence
- Tagging
Here is our article entitled: DIY Cardboard One-To-One Correspondence Counting Cards for Toddlers, where you can read about these important math skills.
In the above article, you will learn about the following:
- What tagging is
- What is one-to-one correspondence, and why is it important
- Four tips to consider when working on the skill of one-to-one correspondence with your child
What you will need to recreate this activity:
- Journal
- Markers
- Black beans
- Glue
- Container
How to put this activity together:
When you have collected all your materials, draw circles of the exact sizes to represent the ladybugs on your page and colour them in a colour of your choice.
I drew my ladybugs with open wings so that I would have three sections. One section for the number name, a section for the numeral and a section for the girls to glue on the corresponding amount of beans.
Once your ladybugs are completed, present your child with this super simple and functional activity with a container of black beans for them to glue spots unto the ladybugs.
Tip: You can work with counters with your child to work on the important math skill tagging.
You can use the following as counters:
- Buttons
- Bottle caps
- Stones
- Blocks
- Connecting cubes
Please Note: When working with manipulatives, ensure your little ones are supervised.
How to present this activity to your child:
I would recommend having your child identify each number and its name. Then count out the beans tagging each while working on glueing them on.
We do hope you find this activity useful.
