Are you looking for a fun and memorable activity to teach or review 2D shapes with your little ones?

Here is a simple activity you can try with your toddlers or preschoolers if you are working on learning or reviewing 2D shapes.

Match the shapes to help the ladybugs find their spots on the leaves.

Little ones love Ladybugs, so learning is guaranteed with this engaging activity.

Some teachers choose to teach shapes by introducing their little ones to a shape a week. In some classes, shapes are taught as a separate theme; in others, teachers teach shapes throughout the year. So, there really is no right or wrong time to try this simple yet engaging activity.

This engaging and fun activity is low-prep, and I love that. I am sure you do too! It can be ready for learning fun in under twenty minutes!

Materials you will need to recreate this simple activity:

  • Markers
  • Construction paper
  • Glue
  • Scissors

How to create this simple activity:

The steps for creating this activity are pretty straightforward. You do not need to be an artist.

Step 1: Draw a leaf onto green construction paper and cut it out.

Step 2: Decide which shapes you will teach your little ones and draw them on red construction paper. ( You can draw your shapes onto any colour paper you like, especially if you are working on colour recognition with your little ones.)

Step 3: Take one of each shape and trace them multiple times on your leaf.

Step 4: Use your marker to outline the shapes on the leaf and add heads and legs as well.

Step 5: Use your maker to add wing separation and spots on each red shape.

There you have it! In five simple steps, your little one is ready for learning fun!

This simple educational activity is excellent for working on the following:

  • Teaching/reviewing some basic shapes
  • Concentration
  • Hand-eye coordination
  • Fine motor skills development
  • Spacial awareness

Some ways in which knowing shapes help our little ones are:

  • To Identify objects that are the same and different.
  • To sort and categorize objects.
  • To use descriptive vocabulary.

There are so many opportunities in our environment that we should be using daily to teach our little ones their shapes.

When teaching young children about shapes, it is best to do so through play and real-life experiences.

Children need to practice manipulating the various shapes, which is key to ensuring that when they do learn their shapes, their learning is concrete.

Below are six simple ways you can use the environment to teach shapes to your little ones.

  • Discussing the shape of a circular plate your child is eating from.
  • Discussing the shape of the food they are eating. (A slice of cheese, watermelon or pizza.)
  • Discussing the shape of a square or rectangular book they are reading.
  • Observing shapes on household items.
  • Providing your child with puzzles focused on teaching shapes.
  • Observing and discussing shapes that are on clothing.

When children are given first-hand experiences in manipulating shapes in different orientations, they will begin to notice them in the environment around them.

Always keep in mind that the teaching of shapes goes beyond your child’s ability to identify shapes by their names. Over time, as we teach and expose our children to shapes, our end goal should always be for them to describe each shape by discussing their properties comfortably.

Extention and integration of this Simple Bug Shapes activity:

  • If your little one is working on one-to-one correspondence, you can have them count the spots on the back of the bugs.
  • For littles working on learning letter sounds, this activity would be great for reviewing the ‘L’ sound.
