Raised Salt Painting Art Activity For Young Children

Raised Salt painting is an activity that has now been added to our list of Favourites!

This activity was super fun and worth the try! My littles enjoyed watching the salt change colour with each touch of their brushes.

One thing I love about this activity is that any age group can enjoy it!

I enjoyed it myself! It was super relaxing!

This activity requires few materials, which I believe can be found in any home with school-aged children, and it is also low-prep, which is a plus for busy moms/teachers!

Materials you will need:

  • Black Cardstock paper (Thick paper works best when using watercolour paints.)
  • Table Salt
  • Squeeze Glue
  • Tray to work on
  • Pencil
  • Watercolour paint ( If you do not have watercolour paint, you can make your own paint by using food colouring.)

How to prepare this activity:

Step 1: After collecting all your materials, place your paper on your tray and use a pencil to draw what you want to paint. Go over the outline with glue, or just allow your creativity to flow by squeezing glue onto your paper to create your design. (We were reading books about fish, so my girls wanted to paint fish.)

Step 2: Sprinkle the table salt all over the glue on your paper until all the glue is covered. You can slant your tray/container so all the unwanted salt moves to the side of your tray.

Step 3: Now, your paper is prepped for painting! Present your little ones with your watercolour paints and a container with some water!

There you have it! In three straightforward steps, it is time for some painting fun!

Present this simple and fun activity to your little ones so they can watch as the watercolour moves from left to right as they touch the salt with the watercolour paint!

For a great fine motor activity, your little ones can use a dropper to add colour to the salt. I find that with this method, things will get really messy because it requires working with more water.

Salt painting requires quite a bit of time to dry. Your painting will be dry within a day or two. It is surely worth the wait when your children can see their work of art being displayed.

I think this activity would be great for practising sight word recognition or working on any word study. We do hope you find this activity useful.
