If you ask me, Sticky notes should be staples in any home learning journey. We are enjoying incorporating Sticky notes, large and small, into our learning journey at the moment. There is just so much simple low-prep learning and fun to be had with them.
On a busy day, when you are looking for a simple activity that will keep little hands busy and learning at the same time, how about trying this simple sticky note counting journal activity to help your little ones to work on the following skills?
Number recognition
Number words recognition
One-to-one correspondence
Tagging
What you will need to recreate this simple activity:
- Your learning journal
- Sticky notes
- Markers
- Glue( I encourage my girls to use glue to hold their sticky notes in place because our journals are manipulated by them on a regular basis. We also use the activities we do in our learning journal to review on days when we do not have activities prepared.)
How to recreate this simple sticky note activity:
Step 1: Write the number words and corresponding amounts with markers on your sticky notes.
Step 2: Place the sticky notes in the order you want your child to find them in their journals or on plain paper.
Step 3: Use a marker of your choice to draw lines horizontally and vertically in the spaces between the sticky notes.
Step 4: Write the number for the words in the squares created.
Step 5: Remove all your sticky notes from the journal and place them on the surface your child will be working from, and your activity is ready for your little ones to complete!
How to present your child with this activity:
The ideal way to present this activity to your little ones is to have them work with you to identify the numbers they will be working with. Have them practice counting out amounts for the numbers they see in the squares in their learning journals. Let them look on their sticky notes and tag the red dots as they count the amounts.
Items you can use as counters:
- Buttons
- Wooden pieces
- Blocks
- Cubes
- Plastic chips
- Stones
- Bottle caps
Any items you have in bulk at home that are safe for your little ones to manipulate can be used as counters.
We do hope you find this activity useful.
